Carol - I've been on the move, posting from Arizona and northern California with a quick trip to Dallas in between. Jet lagged and road weary so I hope this makes sense - but I wanted send a quick reply to thank you very much for taking the time to let me know I'm on track! Sometimes my topics don't speak as directly to the dollars and cents of money as the category "women and money" suggests but your comment shows how varied the topics of conversation about money must be. I try to do the essentials and then slip in some money $ense and sensibilities. I'm in the Bay Area - which is home for me - on a project working closely with young women I've known all their lives. They're asking the $$ questions of me that they would ask of their Moms whom they "don't want to worry" or more often with whom they have major money differences. I wrote this column to bridge the gap(s) that mothers and daughters feel these days about trying to manage money and make ends meet in hard times. Yes, I was talking about money mentoring - which can and should flow up and down among generations. I thank my dear "pay it forward" benefactor: 87-year old Marcy Hyman. She was the financial wind beneath my feet in a time long ago but always remembered.

Valerie - thanks so much for this post; I share your respect for the "paying it forward" concept. I believe too in Luke's admonition that, "To whom much is given, much is expected".

I think the most useful thing I've learned is that women must proactivley advocate for themselves when it comes to negotiating starting salaries and raises/bonuses later on. We can not expect that our companies will simply "do the right thing" and pay us fairly for the work we do.

Of course, we have to be smart about the way we do this - must be authentic and must be in line with the company culture.
